The Madera City Council is reaching out to the community for assistance as it begins its search for the next city administrator.

The council is currently conducting an open search for the candidate who will ultimately succeed former Madera City Administrator David Tooley, whose retirement became effective December of 2017. As part of an outreach effort to involve the community in the process, the city has posted both an online and printable survey for residents to weigh in on the qualities they would like to see in Madera’s next city leader.

A link to the five-question survey can be found on the homepage of the city’s website at, or it can be accessed directly at It will remain available through May 18, according to a city spokesman.

The city administrator is appointed by the city council and is responsible for addressing the priorities established by the council, and overseeing day-to-day operations of the city. The survey contains open-ended questions for which participants can fill in their answers and is available in both English and Spanish.

Questions asked on the short survey include:

  • What are the most important issues/priorities facing the City of Madera that the new City Administrator should help address?
  • What skills, experiences and leadership attributes are the most critical to a new City Administrator’s success in Madera?
  • How would you like the City Administrator to interact with the community?
  • Where do you see the City of Madera in 10 years?
  • Is there anything else you would like the City Council to consider when selecting a new City Administrator?

Former Madera Chief of Police Steve Frazier is currently serving as city administrator for a limited term during the recruitment.
