A short summary of each division within the Community Development Department is provided below:
- Planning
Planning Department: The Planning Department is responsible for long range planning within the city and for processing and approving site-specific development proposals. Planning Staff members also serve as staff to the Madera Planning Commission.
- Engineering
Engineering Department: The Engineering Department is responsible for overseeing the design and construction of public facilities in the city. When the City takes the lead on these projects, the Engineering Department also puts the projects out to bid and manages the contractor while they are completing the job.
- Building
Building Department: The Building Department is responsible for issuing building permits and conducting inspections for all construction projects on private property. The Building Department also oversees the City’s Interim Fire Marshall.
- Public Works
Public Works Department: The Public Works Department maintains public infrastructure necessary for everyday life including streets, street lights, traffic signals, storm drainage, the water and sewer systems, and the wastewater treatment plant. The Public Works Department also maintains city buildings such as City Hall and the John Wells Youth Center, and manages the City’s solid waste program. Questions concerning pothole repairs, streetlight outages, traffic signal timing, street sweeping, water service, sewer or flooding issues are addressed by this department.
