City of Madera adopts SolarAPP+ to streamline solar permitting process

The City of Madera has partnered with the California Energy Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to introduce SolarAPP+, an advanced plan review software aimed at simplifying the solar permitting process for rooftop installations. Following a comprehensive testing phase, SolarAPP+ is now in use by the City of Madera for processing Solar Photovoltaic (PV) applications, eliminating the need for traditional plan reviews.

The software’s main objective is to simplify code compliance checks, expedite the issuance of building permits, and enhance efficiency for qualifying rooftop solar systems. City officials emphasize that SolarAPP+ signifies a substantial leap forward in Madera’s dedication to sustainable energy and environmental responsibility, providing a more streamlined approval process for solar projects that will assist licensed contractors and installers in efficiently completing solar projects.

Chief Building Official, Rafael Magallan, expressed enthusiasm about the integration of SolarAPP+, stating, “This advancement in solar permitting technology is significant for our community. By embracing SolarAPP+, we’re not only expediting the permit approval process, but we’re doing so in a way that ensures that safety standards for solar installations are maintained. It’s a win-win situation for all stakeholders involved.”

The adoption of SolarAPP+ will significantly reduce the time required for licensed contractors and installers to secure Solar (Photovoltaic) permits, fostering in a more efficient and responsive environment for Madera’s growing solar industry. This move aligns with broader efforts to promote renewable energy adoption and contribute to a sustainable future for the city.
