The Centennial Pool Complex will close for the remainder of the 2025 swimming season, the City of Madera Parks & Community Services Department announced today. The decision was made to prioritize necessary repairs to the facility’s underground plumbing infrastructure.
As part of routine operational oversight, monitoring by pool staff revealed unusually high water consumption. This prompted the City to proactively engage a professional leak analysis firm to conduct a comprehensive assessment. Using specialized acoustic technology, their investigation pinpointed a leak within the primary return plumbing of the deep-water diving pool.
This discovery comes just one year after the City completed a $239,000 renovation of the facility. That project included the replastering and retiling of both the main and diving pools, along with the installation of new skimmers, safety tiles, and accessible hand railings. This newly identified plumbing issue, located underground, was undetectable during last year’s surface-level work. While further amenity upgrades were planned, the City must now prioritize this foundational repair to protect both the facility and the community’s recent investment.
Unfortunately, the leak is causing substantial water loss and raises concerns about potential ground erosion. Continued operation could pose a future risk to the integrity of the pool shell and the surrounding concrete deck.
“After just completing a fresh replastering, this news is incredibly disappointing for everyone,” said Joseph Hebert, Director of Parks & Community Services. “But when a foundational safety issue is discovered, there’s no other option. We’re taking decisive action now to protect this community asset and ensure it remains safe for our residents to enjoy for years to come.”
The repair work will involve draining the pools and excavating sections of the deck to access and repair the compromised plumbing.
The City of Madera appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as we take these necessary steps. We look forward to welcoming the community back to a fully restored, safe, and reliable aquatic facility once repairs have been completed.
