Citizens Academy

The Madera Citizens Academy offers residents an inside look at local government operations, providing an overview of City departments, services, and programs through presentations, discussions, and activities. The program is designed to educate, engage, and build stronger connections between residents and local government.

Participants will gain a better understanding of how decisions are made, how public resources are managed, and how they can play a role in shaping the future of their community. No prior knowledge of local government is required — the only prerequisite is a desire to learn more about the City of Madera and help make a positive impact.

Have you ever wondered how local government works behind the scenes? The Madera Citizens Academy is a citywide educational program designed to provide residents with an inside look at how the City of Madera operates and delivers services to the community.

Designed for neighborhood leaders, business representatives, community organization members, and residents interested in becoming more engaged, the program provides an introduction to City departments, services, and public processes. The only prerequisite for participation is an interest in learning more about the City and contributing to its future.

Citizens Academies are designed to strengthen communication between local government and residents, provide insight into public processes, and encourage civic engagement. The Madera Citizens Academy serves as a starting point for individuals interested in becoming more involved in their community, including opportunities to serve on boards, commissions, or in other civic roles.

Program sessions will cover topics including the role of the City Council, City operations, public safety, parks and recreation, finance, and community development. Each session will last approximately one and a half hours, with additional time available for discussion and questions.

There is no cost to participate in the Madera Citizens Academy. The program is open to all Madera residents; however, space is limited. If you are interested in learning more about your local government and becoming more involved in your community, the Citizens Academy is a great place to start.

Sessions will be held at various City facilities and locations throughout Madera to provide participants with a firsthand look at City operations and services.

No. The Madera Citizens Academy is designed as an educational and interactive experience. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and share feedback, but there are no tests, assignments, or public speaking requirements.

Yes. The Madera Citizens Academy is a citywide program that provides an overview of City services, operations, and departments, including one session focused on Police Department operations. It is separate from the Madera Citizens Police Academy, which is a dedicated multi-session program focused exclusively on law enforcement operations, procedures, and public safety.

The Madera Citizens Academy is an educational program designed to provide insight into how City government operates. While participants are encouraged to ask questions and share feedback, the program is not intended to replace the City’s existing customer service channels for reporting concerns or requesting services.
