Sewer Maintenance

The Sewer Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the City of Madera’s sanitary sewer collection system. Its primary goal is to ensure that wastewater is efficiently collected and delivered to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The system includes approximately 140 miles of sanitary sewer mains, five sewer lift pump stations, and pipelines ranging in size from 6″ to 48″.

The division frequently interacts with the public, provides assistance during emergency repairs, and responds to water and sewer-related concerns to maintain safe and reliable service for residents and businesses.

Sewer System Management Plans and Reports

Fats, oils, and grease (commonly referred to as FOG) from cooking and food preparation can cause major blockages in sewer systems if not disposed of properly. These blockages can lead to costly backups, property damage, and environmental hazards. Proper FOG management is essential for maintaining a healthy and functioning sewer system in the City of Madera.

Businesses and residents are encouraged to follow best practices for FOG disposal, including using grease traps, properly scraping and collecting cooking oil, and never pouring grease down sinks, drains, or toilets. The City provides guidance and resources to help prevent FOG-related problems.

The City of Madera provides sewer maintenance and inspection services to ensure that our community’s sewer system functions safely and efficiently. This includes responding to issues such as main line blockages, unusual odors, or suspected leaks in the public sewer system. While homeowners are responsible for lateral lines running from the main to their property, the City is here to assist with problems related to the public system.

If you experience a sewer-related issue or notice a potential problem in the public sewer system, please submit a request so our team can respond promptly and investigate the situation.
