Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste Info Sheet
Many common household products—such as cleaning fluids, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, paints, and automotive supplies—contain hazardous chemicals that can be harmful to you, your family, and the environment. Products labeled "Caution", "Warning", or "Danger" require special handling and disposal.
What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
HHW includes everyday items that can create environmental hazards if not disposed of properly. Common examples include:
- Old paint
- TVs and computer monitors
- Batteries
- Fluorescent lights
- Thermometers and thermostats
- Waste oil and gasoline
- Pesticides
Why are TVs and computer monitors hazardous?
These devices may contain mercury paste, gas, and leaded glass. Deliver old TVs and computer monitors to the Fairmead Landfill at 21739 Road 19, Chowchilla, CA (559-665-3099). Televisions and computer monitors are accepted free of charge.
What are mercury-containing wastes?
Mercury is found in fluorescent lamps, thermometers, and thermostats. Improper disposal can release harmful levels of mercury into the environment. Tips for safe handling:
- Give old thermostats to your heating contractor for proper recycling.
- Use low-mercury lighting fixtures.
- Purchase mercury-free thermometers and thermostats.
What can I do with old paint?

First, check if the paint is still usable—schools or non-profits may accept donations. If not:
- Remove the lid and leave the paint can open outside to dry.
- Once dry, place the paint in your gray garbage container.
- For faster drying, mix paint with kitty litter, then place it in trash bags for disposal.
- Always choose latex paint when possible.
Where can I take old paint?
Vendors accept up to 5 gallons of latex and oil-based paint, stains, and varnish. In Madera:
