Trail improvement project underway at Lions Town & Country Park

Construction has begun on a long-planned trail improvement project at Lions Town & Country Park in Madera.

The project will reconstruct nearly one mile of existing pathways, replacing weathered decomposed granite surfaces with new asphalt trails featuring defined edging and striping. Once complete, the upgrades will provide safer and more accessible routes for walkers, joggers, and families who frequent the park, according to city officials.

The Madera City Council awarded an $841,019 construction contract to Tosted Asphalt, Inc. on July 16, 2025. Crews have since mobilized and begun work on site.

“After years of planning and partnership, this project is finally becoming a reality,” said Mayor Cece Gallegos. “We’re investing not only in infrastructure, but in our community’s future—ensuring that Lions Town & Country Park continues to inspire connection, recreation, and pride for years to come.”

Councilmember Jose Rodriguez, who represents the district that includes Lions Town & Country Park, said the improvements reflect persistent advocacy and collaboration.

“I’ve pushed for this project every year because I know how much this park means to the families who use it,” Rodriguez said. “These trails are part of daily life in Madera, and seeing construction begin feels like a promise fulfilled to our residents.”

Funding for the project was made possible through strong state partnerships. The City received $500,000 in support from State Senator Anna Caballero and $1.1 million from the California Natural Resources Agency, championed by Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria.

“We’re grateful for the support of Senator Caballero and Assemblymember Soria,” said Mayor Gallegos. “Their leadership helped turn years of discussion into action. Thanks to their commitment, Madera families will soon have a safer, more beautiful place to walk, run, and connect.”

Construction includes removal of existing trail surfaces followed by installation of new asphalt pathways. Work is expected to be completed within 90 days, weather permitting.

Once complete, the upgraded trail system will enhance recreation opportunities, promote active lifestyles, and improve accessibility within one of Madera’s most visited community parks.
