Severe Weather Alert: City of Madera offers free sandbags ahead of heavy rain

Madera severe weather warning graphic

The City of Madera is preparing for a severe weather system expected to bring periods of moderate to heavy rain this week. Residents are urged to take preventative steps now to reduce the risk of flooding and property damage.

During forecasted heavy rain events, the City provides sandbags and sand free of charge to Madera residents. Sandbags are a proven, practical tool to help divert water away from homes, garages, and other vulnerable structures. Availability is limited to periods when significant rainfall is expected. Residents must bring their own shovels to fill sandbags.

Sandbag and Sand Locations

  • Sandbags: Public Works Corporation Yard, 1030 S. Gateway Drive
  • Sand: East side of the lot at E Street and 14th Street, across the railroad tracks from the Public Works Corporation Yard

Residents are encouraged to pick up supplies early and place sandbags before rain intensifies.

After the Storm
Sandbags may be stored in a covered area and reused for future storm events. Once the woven material deteriorates, bags should be discarded. Clean sand can be reused for gardens or other outdoor purposes.
