Construction progresses on Madera’s $2M sidewalk and accessibility project
The City of Madera has begun a $2 million project to install new sidewalks, curb ramps and gutters in 13 areas across the community. Work is focused near schools and locations where sidewalk gaps have long existed.
Mayor Cece Gallegos said the goal is to provide a safer environment for all forms of transportation, with an emphasis on safe routes to school. “Many of our youth walk to and from school every day,” Gallegos said.
The initiative is part of the City’s effort to improve walkability, accessibility and safety for residents. Improvements are already visible along Clinton Street and Schnoor Avenue. In the weeks ahead, additional construction will take place in several neighborhoods.
City Manager Arnoldo Rodriguez explained that upgrading sidewalks in developed areas poses challenges due to utilities, trees, driveways and parking lots. He said staff review each site carefully to limit disruptions, particularly regarding trees. “We make every effort to preserve mature trees and the urban forest,” Rodriguez said. “In some cases, limited removal of landscaping is unavoidable to complete the improvements.”
The project is funded through a grant from the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program and Local Transportation Funds. Gallegos noted that outside funding has helped the City secure several grants to deliver key infrastructure upgrades.
With construction underway, the City is taking steps toward safer streets and more walkable neighborhoods to benefit children, families and pedestrians of all ages.
